Brussels, Belgium – On October 16, 2025.
His Excellency Akillino H. Susaia presented the official copies of his Appointment as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federated States of Micronesia to the European Union (EU) to the Deputy Chief of Protocol for the European Union.
Ambassador Susaia’s accreditation to the European Union (EU) is in support of H.E. President Wesley Simina`s vision to expand FSM’s global diplomatic presence. Ambassador Susaia will now serve as FSM’s first Ambassador to the European Union based in Geneva, Switzerland.
During the discussions with the Deputy Chief of Protocol, Ambassador Susaia expressed appreciation for the opportunity to initiate and confirm his Credentials to the EU’s leadership and looks forward to the opportunity to officially meet with the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Parliament. Ambassador Susaia also noted the ongoing work between the FSM Government and the EU to operationalize FSM and the EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) to deepen economic integration and promote development and mutual trade. Furthermore, a discussion was held on the Embassy’s role in the process and procedure on accessing EU technical and development assistance. It was agreed that the FSM Embassy in Geneva will serve as the coordination point between the European Union and the FSM.
Following the meeting with Deputy Chief of Protocol, on Friday, October 17, 2025, Ambassador Susaia met with Ms. Pavlina Nikolova, Deputy Head of Unit DG Mare and Ms. Aurélie Buthod-Garcon. This is the Unit responsible for ensuring compliance with EU’s Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fisheries regulations. The meeting was a follow up on FSM`s pending application to export tuna fish products into the EU member countries markets through the FSM Competent Authority (CA). Ambassador Susaia informed Deputy Head Nikolova that the FSM Embassy in Geneva will continue to coordinate with relevant officials in the FSM capital on the remaining tasks needed in order to complete EU’s review of FSM’s CA application.

His Excellency Akillino H. Susaia met with Ms. Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General of Operations from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at the IOM headquarters in Geneva Switzerland on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. Ambassador Susaia and Deputy Director General Daniels discussed the IOM Development Fund 2025 project: Diaspora Research: Laying the Ground work for Diaspora Engagement in the Federated States of Micronesia that was recently approved by the IOM. This annual project will commence on February 2026 and will last for about a year ending on January 02, 2027. Additionally, the project will support the Federated States of Micronesia`s migration policy implementation and address challenges as a key development priority that will also support local capacity development for Government stakeholders.
Ambassador Susaia expressed appreciation to Deputy Director Daniels for the assistance and continued support on behalf of the FSM National Government. He also noted FSM`s commitment toward further enhancing the valuable partnership through future partnership opportunities.
Deputy Director General Daniels reiterated IOM`s commitment to supporting the FSM and highlighted IOM Director General Amy Popes commitment to prioritize assisting countries in the Pacific Region. She also encouraged the FSM to share progress of the aforementioned project to raise awareness and visibility among member States especially during the next International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), which reviews progress on the Global Compact for Migration, scheduled in 2026 in Geneva Switzerland.
H.E. Ambassador and Permanent Representative Akillino H. Susaia attended a briefing by H.E. Richard Brown, Ph.D Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the United Nations Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva Switzerland for the Candidature for re-election to the membership of Category C of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) purpose of presenting its Candidature for re-election to the membership of Category C of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at elections to be held in November this year. The briefing was led by Mr. Bertrand Smith, Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, and Jamaica's candidate for re-election. Director General Smith outlined his vision as well as discuss his priorities to support the Pacific region during his anticipated second term in office.
SWISS PACIFIC 2025 Festival
FSM Ambassador and Permanent Representative, H. E. Akillino H. Susaia Participated in the 2025 Swiss Pacific Festival along with First Secretary Johnny Hadley Jr. and his family.
H.E. Ambassador Akillino H. Susaia spoke on behalf of all the Pacific Heads of Missions in Geneva by welcoming all Pacific officials, family and friends and thanked everyone for attending the 2025 Pacific Festival. Ambassador Susaia expressed appreciation to the organizing officers and committee and thank them for all their hard work in this years Swiss Pac festivities. Ambassador Susaia noted that all Pacific Islanders living in Switzerland in the Pacific way of life are all Ambassadors of their respective countries and as such should share and represent the Pacific way of communal life and respect in their respective communities all over Switzerland and Europe.
